Housing update for incoming freshmen – A message from Tim Trevan, Executive Director of Student Housing

Section 1

June 29, 2020

The choice of whether to live on campus may be a difficult one given the uncertain nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly with respect to restrictions involving health and travel. Here is some additional information that may help when making decisions regarding living arrangements for the 2020-2021 academic year.

  • UCI is taking precautions to limit the spread of the COVID-19 in the residence halls based on guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
  • While we are not able to offer incoming freshmen our traditional two-year on-campus housing guarantee, given our current planning and projections, we will very likely be able to provide on-campus housing for any student who would like to live on campus. In the event on-campus housing is not available, UCI can offer resources that will help identify alternative off-campus housing options.
  • Circumstances right now may make travel complicated for some of our new and continuing students. With this in mind, housing contracts may be canceled if government-imposed travel or visa restriction make it impossible for students to arrive on campus for fall quarter. In addition, an appeal to modify/cancel a housing contract may be submitted anytime during the 2020-2021 academic year, due to circumstances/events beyond students’ control. More information about the contract cancellation process can be found at the Housing website. For ACC lease holders, UCI is working diligently to resolve this issue and will have more information to share with students by Friday, July 10.
  • There are many factors to weigh when making fall plans. To give students more time to plan, we are modifying our contract cancellation timeline. Contracts may be submitted now and canceled any time up to September 1, 2020, with no penalty and a full refund of the reservation fee.

We also wish to remind students and families that UCI is fully prepared to adapt instruction to satisfy the needs for freshmen for all intended majors for the entire 2020-21 academic year. To further support our students and their families in making this important decision in the college experience, we are extending the housing contract submission deadline to Wednesday, July 15, 2020.
