Housing Updates for April 23

Section 1

April 23, 2021

Greetings Housing Residents!

This week we focus on important COVID-19 vaccines updates that were recently featured in Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Willie Bank’s, April 21st email:

  • #SleevesUpUCI – COVID-19 vaccination is now open to all California residents who are 16 or older, and UCI students are strongly encouraged to schedule their vaccination as soon as possible. Find details on how to schedule your vaccine appointment here, and if you need help, call UCI Contact Tracing and Vaccine Navigation Services at (949) 824-2300. The FRESH Basic Needs Hub is providing transportation support for students who face financial barriers accessing a vaccine site.
  • Testing exemption for vaccinated students: Effective April 26, 2021, students who are fully vaccinated (14 days after their last dose) and upload their vaccination records are no longer required to participate in the Asymptomatic Testing Program. Students will receive verification of their test exemption from the UCI Student Health Center (SHC) via secure messaging. The ZotPass will reflect your exempt status within 24 hours of your verification. *Continue testing until you receive verification from the SHC.* (Student athletes may still be required to test regularly based on their rules and regulations for competition). If you need assistance uploading your records, call (949) 824-2300. Students should continue daily symptom checking and be evaluated for testing if they are symptomatic.
  • Vaccine mandates for Fall 2021:  The University of California Office of the President announced a proposed policy to mandate COVID-19 vaccine for students, staff and faculty for Fall 2021, and encourages all students, staff, and faculty to get vaccinated now in order to be ready when the proposed mandate is adopted. The proposed mandate is contingent upon full FDA approval of at least one vaccine and widespread availability of vaccine. The policy was released on Thursday (4/22) for a 30-day public comment period. You can read the University of California press release here. The California State University system made a similar announcement today. This presents one more reason to act now and get vaccinated instead of waiting until summer, when scheduling an appointment could be more challenging.
  • A final reminder that the Vista del Campo site for asymptomatic COVID testing will be closed as of Monday April 26th. Please login to the Student Health Portal: https://osh.chs.uci.edu to change your weekly testing appointments to one of the other sites.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) provides useful information for people who have been fully vaccinated at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html. Keep in mind, however, that campus policiestake precedence over federal guidelines.

Whether you are vaccinated or waiting for your shot(s), you are still expected to practice prevention measures.  If you have questions about COVID-related matters on campus, visit the UCI Forward Coronavirus Information Hub.

If you have questions regarding these updates or other COVID-19-related issues in Housing, email them to HousingCovidQuestion@uci.edu.

Sincerely,

Tim Trevan, Executive Director
