UC COVID-19 Vaccine Policy, FAQs for Students
July 28, 2021
Dear UCI Students:
We are writing as a follow-up on the Provost’s email from July 16 regarding the UC COVID-19 Vaccine Program. This policy requires all UC students to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in order to physically be present on campus for attending classes, for living on campus (in UCI or in ACC housing) or for working on campus beginning this fall. The deadline for compliance with this policy is September 6, 2021 for students on the main campus. Please refer to the Provost’s email for deadlines for School of Law and School of Medicine.
Official UC communications and FAQs about the policy can be found at the following URLs:
COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, and one of the most important tools we have to combat this pandemic and we appreciate the many of you who have already received your vaccine and uploaded your record.
Vaccine Verification via the Student Health Center Portal
The UC policy requires individuals to show proof of vaccination. Once you receive your COVID-19 vaccine, please upload your vaccination record on the UCI Student Health Center Patient Portal. There are step-by-step instructions for uploading your vaccination record. In addition, this short video tutorial walks you through the upload process.
Any student who needs assistance obtaining a COVID-19 vaccine and/or uploading their vaccination record to the appropriate portal may contact Contact Tracing and Vaccine Navigation Services (CTVNS). They can be reached at 949-824-2300 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Vaccine Exemption, Exception or Deferral
Instructions regarding how to request a medical, religious, disability or pregnancy exemption, exception or deferral and the applicable request forms can be found on the SHC website. All request forms must be uploaded to the UCI Student Health Center Patient Portal. Please note that the review of your request may take up to seven (7) business days. Students will receive notification of approval or denial of the request via secure message on the portal.
For questions regarding the exemption process, please send a secure message on the portal to: “Immunization Exemption/Deferral Request Inquiry” and a SHC nurse will respond within 3-5 business days.
Students who are not vaccinated because of receiving an exemption, exception or deferral must, at a minimum, wear masks and participate in regular COVID-19 testing. Students who arrive partially vaccinated or whose exemption, exception, or deferral request is pending must also mask and participate in regular COVID-19 testing. Students who are not vaccinated and not approved for an exemption, exception or deferral will be subject to enforcement protocols.
Vaccine Availability in Fall
The COVID-19 vaccine will be available through on-campus Student Health Center Vaccine Fairs for Fall Quarter, along with ALL other required vaccines. HOWEVER, UCI students SHOULD NOT plan to wait for these events to ensure they are compliant with the policy. The COVID-19 vaccine is currently available free-of-charge at multiple sites in Orange County, at John Wayne and LAX Airports, and at Gottschalk Plaza for on-campus students without transportation. Students outside of the Orange County area are strongly encouraged to find a vaccine site in their local community. Again, CTVNS is available to help and answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccine and locate available vaccine locations in your community. They can be reached at 949-824-2300 or email@example.com.
Information for International Students
For students who have received a COVID-19 vaccination outside of the United States, UCI will accept vaccines authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO). To find more information on authorized vaccines on the Emergency Use Listing/Prequalification (EUL/PQ) list, visit the WHO website. Please note that the listing changes as additional vaccines become authorized. Unvaccinated individuals arriving in the U.S. may be able to get vaccinated at an airport or schedule an appointment at a vaccine provider. Several airports offer COVID-19 vaccines, including Los Angeles International (LAX), Orange County (SNA), and San Francisco International (SFO). Additional resources for international students can be found at this website.
Students who do not comply with UC vaccination requirements, including the COVID-19 vaccine mandate, may be subject to disciplinary action or loss of campus privileges, including but not limited to loss of wifi privileges, restriction from campus resources, restriction of access to campus, and an academic registration hold restricting students from registering for classes. Disciplinary action can include probation, suspension, or dismissal from the university.
Thank you for your cooperation with all of the campus requirements to keep the UCI community safe. We need to keep up the good work and encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible. For questions or if you need assistance with finding a vaccination appointment, please contact 949.824.2300. #SleevesUpUCI
