Clarification on COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Exceptions

Section 1

January 10, 2022

As shared in President Drake’s letter from December 21, 2021, University of California policy requires employees to keep their COVID-19 vaccination status up to date. This includes COVID-19 boosters for those who are eligible. To comply with this policy, UCI is requiring boosters for all eligible individuals by January 31, 2022. This message is intended to provide clarification regarding COVID-19 vaccine booster exceptions.

There are four scenarios for booster exceptions:

  1. If you have an existing medical, disability or religious exception
  2. If you have an existing pregnancy deferral or other time-limited exception
  3. If you were previously denied an exception
  4. If you want an exception to this booster based on medical, disability or religious exception

Please read below for details on each scenario.

If You Have an Existing Medical, Disability or Religious Exception

Any UCI employee who requested and was granted an exception (medical, disability or religious objection) to the initial series of the COVID vaccine does not need to submit a new request for an exception.

  • Your previous exception is also valid for this booster.
  • You must continue to follow all non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) including masking and once-weekly asymptomatic testing for campus employees and twice-weekly asymptomatic testing for healthcare employees.
  • You also may decide to get vaccinated at any time. Visit the UCI Forward web page for information on where to get vaccinated.

If You Have an Existing Pregnancy Deferral or Other Time-Limited Exception

Any UCI employee who requested and was granted either: (1) a pregnancy deferral to the initial series of the COVID vaccine, or (2) whose exception was, in any way, a time-limited exception, must submit a new request for an exception to this booster if the time period has ended or obtain vaccination. (A time limit was noted on the form granting the pregnancy deferral or exception.)

  • The deadline to submit a new request or upload proof of vaccination is January 31, 2022.
  • All non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs), including masking and once-weekly asymptomatic testing for campus employees and twice-weekly asymptomatic testing for healthcare employees, must be followed until the University responds to the request.

If You Were Previously Denied Any Exception

Any UCI employee who requested and was denied any exception to the initial series of the COVID vaccine and wants an exception to this booster, may do so by submitting a form.

If You Want an Exception to This Booster

Any UCI employee who did not request an exception to the initial series of the COVID vaccine and wants an exception to this booster, may do so by submitting a form.
