Student FAQs on Flu Vaccine

Section 1

When is the due date to get the flu vaccine?

November 1, 2020. Please note that your flu vaccination must be received on or after August 1, 2020 to ensure that the vaccine will protect you from current influenza strains. Flu vaccinations received during the 2019-20 flu “season” and/or prior to August 1st will not comply with this mandate.

Why do I have to get one as a UCI student?

The University of California issued a directive on July 31 that all employees and students in the UC system must receive an influenza vaccination.

If I am not on campus, does this still apply?

Will UCI offer drive through flu shots?

No. Students must come to the Student Health Center on campus to receive their flu vaccine. Flu vaccine clinics are available now and you can schedule an appointment online on the Student Health Patient Portal. However, you do not need to obtain your flu vaccine at the Student Health Center. There are other options particularly if you are living out-of-area/out-of-state.

What are the other options available to me for obtaining a flu vaccine other than Student Health Center?

If you are covered by UC SHIP, you can obtain a flu vaccine at many OptumRx in-network pharmacies; urgent care centers in the Anthem network; or at a local clinic/medical group that is in the Anthem network. Visit Student Health Center website for a list of providers within 20 miles of campus or visit the Anthem website to find a provider in your area.

If you are covered by a health insurance plan other than UC SHIP, please contact your primary care provider or health insurance plan for a list of its in-network providers that administer flu vaccinations.

I am an international student and am currently living in my home country. Do I still need to get a flu vaccine?

Yes. However, a temporary exemption will be granted if the flu vaccine is not available in your home country. In this case, you will be required to obtain the vaccine upon your arrival on campus.

Where can I learn more about exemptions?

University of California Immunization Exemption Policy

Does my flu vaccine from last year count for this directive?

No. As indicated above, your flu shot must be administered between August 1 and November 1, 2020. Flu vaccines vary from year-to-year and last year’s vaccine will not provide adequate protection for you.

How much does the flu vaccine cost?

If you are covered by UC SHIP, all vaccinations, including the flu, are covered 100% because they are considered “preventative care.” You would have no out-of-pocket cost.

If you are covered by a health insurance plan other than UC SHIP, please contact your primary care provider or health insurance plan for cost information. If your health insurance plan is compliant with the Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) or sold on the health insurance marketplace (i.e, “exchange”), then your plan must cover the flu vaccine and other immunizations with no out-of-pocket cost to the patient.

How do I provide proof to UCI that I received a flu vaccine?

Follow the step-by-step instructions on the Student Health Center website for entering your flu vaccine date and uploading proof of compliance online in your Student Health Patient Portal. Remember: You are not considered to be in compliance with the flu vaccine mandate until you upload this information into your portal.
