UCI Health combats ageism in healthcare
Ageism in healthcare is an all-too-common problem, one that UCI Health geriatric medicine specialists have fought for decades. Every day, Dr. Katayoun Khalighi sees SeniorHealth Center patients who describe feeling devalued, disrespected or dismissed when talking with other doctors and healthcare professionals.
UCI researchers among awardees of new state grants to study COVID-19 data
A UCI study to improve the accuracy and precision of COVID-19 forecasts and scenarios through analysis of inputs from multiple data sources is among the research to receive grants from the UC Health and California Department of Public Health COVID Modeling Consortium. The innovative consortium launched last year to ensure public health policymakers have timely, relevant analysis and insights to support pandemic-related decision-making. UCI, UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco research proposals together received about $236,000 in funding.

Mask requirements in schools reduced coronavirus cases: CDC
School districts that required masks this fall saw significantly fewer coronavirus cases than those where masks were optional, according to a large study of Arkansas schools by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC looked at 233 school districts and found those with mask requirements saw a 23% lower incidence of coronavirus cases.
As U.S. COVID deaths near 1 million, some press for a memorial day
In many ways, life in the U.S. is returning to something of a pre-COVID normal, but for millions of Americans who lost loved ones to the disease, life will never be the same. Now there's an effort led by a group called Marked By COVID to establish an enduring memorial to a pandemic.
