Bringing health, art and nature together

Bringing health, art and nature together

UCI's North Campus will feature a new medical center, museum, healing gardens and research preserve

Cutting-edge science meets spellbinding scenery and works of art

Nature and art can restore the mind, body and spirit. That’s why UCI is creating a destination that fuses next-generation medical care with healing gardens, California art treasures and scenic views of the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve.

Located at the corner of Jamboree Road and Campus Drive, the North Campus project will be anchored by a new UCI Medical Center, which broke ground in November 2021 and will advance UCI Health’s mission to discover, teach and heal. The expansion of UCI’s healthcare campus will bring high-quality care and enable residents to unlock the next level of health through groundbreaking knowledge coupled with the beauty of nature.

The concept for North Campus developed as we considered how to navigate the ever-changing healthcare landscape. The COVID-19 pandemic makes our mission more critical than ever. By expanding access and education with our game-changing model of wellness, we will create a place of hope, where cutting-edge science meets nature and inspires healing.

The overarching vision positions UCI Health for a brilliant future. The new medical center will include a 144-bed acute care hospital focused on oncology, neurosciences, orthopedics, and spine and digestive health, along with emergency services. Joining the hospital will be the UCI Health Center for Advanced Care, home to children’s specialties and medical offices. Together, they will encompass nearly 800,000 square feet – a place where lives are saved and improved through personalized care and innovative procedures found only at a world-class academic health center where patients have access to the best therapies and technologies available.

Not far away, the Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art will house a remarkable collection of more than 4,500 impressionist and contemporary California artworks, primarily from The Irvine Museum and Buck collections. Langson IMCA will serve as a vibrant community hub and exceptional resource for art scholars, art lovers and students of all ages.

When completed, North Campus will become the western gateway to UCI, which has been named the top college “doing the most for the American dream” by The New York Times and a top 10 "Cool School" by Sierra magazine. This ambitious enhancement will extend the reach of UCI Medical Center in Orange, which features the county’s first National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and is rated the best place in Orange County to give and get care.

Over the next few years, North Campus will evolve into a beacon for art and nature lovers, as well as a center for premier-quality, leading-edge healthcare for coastal and southern Orange County.
